Miss Florida woke to the smell of coffee. She rolled over onto her back on the sofa. Melba had covered her with a sheet at some point, and she snuggled it up to her chin. “Hunh, hunh, umm,” she hummed. “Umm, umm, hunh.”

Water ran in the kitchen sink and stopped, and Melba came to the doorway. “I saw your little friend this morning,” she said.

“The kid?”

“Uh-huh.” She crossed the room to sit on the edge of the sofa next to Miss Florida. “She was riding that bike lickety-split down the hill here, making her little engine go with those cards flapping away.”

“Oh, dear. Oh, dear.” Miss Florida scrutinized the street.

“That kid, I think she’s okay, Florida. I don’t think you need to worry about her. I think she’s just playing at her games, and she’s okay. She’s going to be okay.”

Miss Florida smirked. “Okay, okay, she’ll be okay,” she said, singsongy. She turned and patted Melba’s hand. “She’ll be okay, she’ll be okay. But what the heck shall we do today?”

They both laughed. “Coffee’s ready,” said Melba, standing. “I’m going out to spiff up the Dodge for a ride, Miss Florida.”

“Oh goody! I’ll get ready.” She heaved to her feet and cast a glance toward Melba. “I get to go, right?”

Melba paused at the door to the garage. “Honey, I’m not going anywhere without you.”
